Grant Applications Now Being Accepted For Breast Cancer Education/Treatment/Screening Projects From Quad Cities Affiliate of Suzan G. Komen for the Cure

Quad Cities Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure offers grants for innovative projects in the areas of breast health and breast cancer education or outreach projects targeting services not otherwise available to the medically under-served women of the affiliate service area including: Cedar, Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott counties in Iowa as well as Henry, Mercer, Whiteside, and Rock Island counties in Illinois. Research projects will not be considered.

The 2009 grants have been distributed by the Quad Cities Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for programs who support unique breast cancer education, outreach, or screening and treatment for the medically underserved. Research projects are not considered.

The grants awarded covered programs in the Komen Quad Cities Affiliate service area, including Scott, Muscatine, Cedar and Clinton counties in Iowa, and Rock Island, Henry, Mercer and Whiteside counties in Illinois. The Affiliate focuses its resources on the following types of projects within their service area:

Priority 1. Providing mammograms, breast ultrasounds, wigs, breast prosthesis, specialty bras, compression garments and bandages, and lymphedema alert bracelets to women who could not otherwise afford them in all eight counties in the affiliate service area.

Priority 2. Support for Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Programs (BCCEDP) programs in all eight counties in the affiliate service area.

Priority 3. Unique programs throughout our affiliate service area that are directly related to the mission as stated above.

The majority of the funds for the grants program are generated from the annual Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure®, a 5K race held each June at the John Deere Commons, Moline. Since its inception in 1990, the Quad Cities Race has raised over $4.58 million and provides mammograms, breast ultrasounds, wigs, breast prostheses, compression garments and bandages, and medical alert bracelets to the underserved, uninsured, and underinsured in our communities.

Up to seventy-five percent of the funds raised by the Komen Quad Cities Affiliate remain in the greater Quad Cities, with twenty-five percent funding the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program.

In order to ensure their funds make the greatest impact, Komen Affiliates work with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments. These community profiles are then used to establish local grant application and review processes consistent with the Foundation’s standards and mission.

The Komen Quad Cities Affiliate awards grants once a year. A diverse panel of community representatives, local breast health experts, and breast cancer survivors evaluate the merit of all proposals submitted for funding according to specified criteria established through information gained in the community needs assessment.

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Grants Awarded in 2009

The Quad Cities Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is pleased to announce its 2009 grant recipients for projects supporting breast cancer education, screening and treatment of the medically underserved.

Nearly $275,000 was awarded through the yearly grant process to community groups and agencies in an eight-county service area. The dollars granted were raised at the 20th annual Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure held in Moline, Ill. The major grants funded include:

• Beauty Salon and Barber Shop Early Detection Program - $750, to United Neighbors Inc.
• Clinton County Breast and Cervical Cancer Program Support - $6,500 to Visiting Nurse Association of Clinton
• Hispanic Breast Health Education - $5,000 to Whiteside County Health Department
• Multicultural Health Initiative - $2,750, to United Neighbors Inc.
• Muscatine County Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, Outreach Program - $7684.32 to the Louisa County Public Health Department
• Reach Out for Early Detection - $5000 to Henry County Health Department
• Voucher Programs of the Quad Cities - $186,815 (administered by Genesis Medical Center)
