The History of The Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure®

A local partnership formed 20 years ago continues today in hopes of finding a cure for breast cancer. In 1990, St. Luke’s Hospital (now Genesis Medical Center) and the Junior League of the Quad Cities joined together to present the first Komen Race for the Cure®.

Fox 18 became a presenting sponsor in 2008 along with Genesis Medical Center. While each organization has unique reasons for supporting the effort, together they're committed to the Komen Foundation mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.

Genesis Medical Center opened the Center for Breast Health (CBH) in 1994, offering comprehensive breast care in one location, including the latest diagnostic technology and a team of breast health specialists. Women have access to surgical consultations as well as biopsies and imaging procedures.

Education is an important weapon in the fight against breast cancer. The Center educates women about breast cancer through a community speaker’s bureau and instructional classes on breast health issues.

Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure® is the major fund-raising project of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure - Quad Cities Affiliate. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from the Komen Quad Cities are used locally to provide breast health services including mammograms, breast prostheses, breast ultrasounds, compression garments, wigs, and medical alert bracelets to the underserved, uninsured, or underinsured women, in addition to breast health education. Twenty-five percent of the net proceeds from Race help fund the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Award and Research Grant Program, to help find and deliver the cures.

FOX 18 KLJB-TV is dedicated to bringing the highest quality news, sports, and entertainment to the television viewers of the Quad Cities area.
